Digital fabrication MAA 2007/2008 [team work] Parametrically designed House
The Parametrically Designed House was developed by Francisca Aroso, Javier Olmeda and Luis Fernando Odiaga during the Research Studio in DIGITAL TECTONICS at IaaC MAA 2007/2008, with the tutorship of Marta Malé-Alemany, José Pedro Sousa and the assistance of Shane Salisbury and Luis Fraguada.
The project has been developed with the aim of joining the form of the building with the modification of the terrain on a co-relative manner; this is to be able to modify the shape of the house if the terrain “asks” for it, or to modify the terrain if the house-needs lead to an innovative ground level. With this kind of approach the design development reached a point where the dialogue between context and the “object” merged in a fully expressive and tectonic way; with all the advantages that the innovative technologies for architecture: Digital fabrication and computer aided design, numeric control (NC) and CAD-CAM, currently allow.
In order to do so, a parametric and associative design process was used, introducing parameters as the Solar Incidence Angle to arrange the house orientation and it’s openings, the number of square meters and number of users to optimize the habitable surface, twelve chained level points to assure a smooth and absolutely adaptive surface of contact between the building and the plot while adapting the whole aesthetic of the dwelling, as well as the freedom to model the entire project as if it were a clay-sculpture with the confidence that the habitable space is guaranteed by means of comfort and spatial experience.

Roughly translated as “We put it in China, literally”, it’s a Puerto Rican expression used when someone accomplishes a big success. Turns out that our house (wooden, top) has been selected as part of IaaC’s student works presented in (Im)material processes: New Digital Techniques for Architecture, part of the 3rd Beijing Architecture Biennale which is being held in the Beijing Design Park since last October.
